I think AN has an aprioristic prejudice against a problematic series like Evangelion. It was disturbing, ironic (didn't you see that?) and it made fun of the WHOLE world of anime and manga, the worst "artistic" domain in the modern culture. It's no easy to digest, but it's so...
AN, if you are disturbed by the "frozen times", I can understand why you like "Citizen Kane" (great film, anyway), but I give you an advice: don't see "Andrej Roublev" by Tarkovsky or any films by Antonioni... |

I don't think a work needs to be pretentious to be good. Or does the average anime viewer *have* to watch a million and one art films to be able to appreciate a truly good film? I think it would be folly to assume so - and while the Russian masters of film do have their deserved place in cinematic history, I'm not sure it is quite apropos to mention them in the same sentence as EVANGELION. (Though Anno would certainly enjoy that, I imagine.)
When writing a review, you sometimes have to look at a title not just from a critical perspective, but also from the perspective of a fan. The twin questions, therefore, should be these:
Is it good?
and
Am I enjoying this?
Even the masters of painting (Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Rembrandt van Rijn) created art because others enjoyed it - and because it earned them food on their tables and a roof over their heads.
Art is subjective ... but do not deny that art itself is also entertainment. And a form of entertainment that does not entertain will be problematic.
So do not denigrate those who do not consider EVANGELION to be the greatest anime ever made ... because they are just as right in their opinions as those who revere it. It is not so much a lack of understanding ... but simply a different conclusion from a different point of view. _________________ Subjectivity is the only possible approach to reviewing. You realize the movie was just used by the author to give all his whiney fans the finger, right?
Even though I dislike evangelion, I think it's cool that he went and could just tell his fans "up yours" like that. Whiny little snots needed that kind of response when everyone whined about the ending.
Hey, wow, Shinji is whiny too. I think I've just made a connection. _________________ Maybe feminists would take that much pleasure in tearing a man's balls off, but probably not actual women. - VW

As far as I know, there are actually 2 endings to the series. The End of Eva movie is an alternate ending meant to replace the final 2 eps. _________________ CafeChat
